So "knotty mod" is a piece of shock cord run thru the hem of the hammock that allows you to tighten the sides. This keeps the sides of the hammock from falling in towards you. It gathers up the fabric to reduce flapping or sagging and also creates a bit of a pocket (or foot box) that helps to hold in a pad or sleeping bag from falling out.
